General Election Thursday 4th July 2024: Catholic Voices

With over 5 million Catholics in the UK the General Election is an opportunity to bring attention to the big issues of our time. We have a responsibility to make sure political parties commit to tackle the injustices that affect our global family and to care for our common home.

CAFOD GENERAL ELECTION MANIFESTO 2024

We are living in an age of multiple global crises. From growing hunger levels and unprecedented rates of wealth inequality to runaway climate change, protracted conflicts and spiralling global debt levels, whoever wins the election will need to act urgently to tackle these interconnected crises. As an international development agency, working with hundreds of partner organisations across the world, CAFOD is urging the next government to prioritise addressing the root causes of global poverty, injustice and climate change. We lay out seven essential areas for securing a safer, fairer and more sustainable world for all. Read more

Gospel values inform how we look at the world as Christians. These values can also offer a different way of looking at politics, a way that puts the common good before self-interest.

Throughout this election season we will be seeking answers which will help the poor, the marginalised, and the vulnerable. We seek a society in which all families can flourish and where we care for our common home, where we offer a welcoming hand to strangers in need, where we look out for those struggling to get on. Families are the heart of our communities and society. For more guidance click here

Jesuit Missions works with partners in Africa, Asia and South America. Because of the role of Britain as a global economic power, the way we vote in our elections has an effect on people around the world. UK Government policies can make life better or worse for our partners.

Jesuit Missions is calling on the new government to make a commitment to some key principles – principles embodied in the work of our partners – and take action on them. As the nation prepares to head to the polls, we have all you need to fully engage with the process.

ASK CANDIDATES TO RALLY WITH REFUGEES

It’s time to show what the UK stands for: solidarity and a warm welcome for refugees. Refugees have suffered under hostile policies for too long, and too many lives have been lost because there are no safe ways to come here. In the past twelve months, nearly 2,800 children risked their lives crossing the Channel alone, just to reach safety and loved ones.

Ask your candidate to pledge to prioritise safe routes for the next 5 years, so people fleeing war and persecution can find safety, family, and a fresh start in the UK.

Gatwick Detainees Welfare Group has launched a Manifesto for the General Election.

Read our calls for change including that the recommendations of the Brook House Public Inquiry are adopted in full, good quality interpreter services upon request for people in detention, a 28 day time-limit for immigration detention, the right to work for people who have sought asylum for over 6 months, and a compassionate environment for all.

A prayer for generosity Lord, we both know that there are all sorts of personal concerns and desires that I have. Some of them are holy, and some are not. Help me to vote not simply in my own interest, but in yours. For example, how can I put following you in simplicity of life before an attachment to personal wealth? Are there other ways I can show my love for my neighbour through political engagement? Help me to be generous, Lord, and not to be ruled by the personal cost. I ask this in your name, Jesus.
